Registering for the Achievement in Music (AIM) program
is an opportunity for students to be evaluated in several areas: theory, ear training, performance, technique and music listening. Additionally, students may choose at least one of the following for evaluation: sight reading, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, reading lead sheets, playing by ear and composition. Students who register for AIM meet with trained adjudicators in a low-stress environment and receive helpful evaluations.
The AIM program has ten levels designed to take a student through their senior year of high school. Students who complete all areas of a level with a minimum score of 60% in each area and an average score of at least 80% will receive a certificate of completion and a medal. Testing is state certified, and students can include their level achievements on resumes and college applications. To be eligible for the AIM Recognition Award, a student must complete all 6 areas of Levels 7-10 with an average score of 80% or higher and must also complete at least 2 acts of music-related service for each of Levels 7-10. These students may also apply for the Debra Gamero Scholarship. For students who are interested, there is a Collegiate Track that will help students be prepared for music study at the college level.
*My students have all been given an AIM workbook that covers every area previously mentioned. This workbook is the basis for my teaching curriculum and students practice these skills whether they participate in the evaluation portion or not. Having said that, taking the chance to have another music professional give advice and counsel is highly recommended! Contact me with any questions.
